Peel and Stick or Traditional Wallpaper: Which Should You Choose?

Every wallpaper we print is available in two materials: peel and stick and traditional (paste the wall). The design is identical on both, so the choice comes down to your walls, how long you want it up and how you like to decorate. This guide sets out the differences plainly.

The short version

  • Choose peel and stick if you rent, like to change things often, or want to hang it yourself in an afternoon with no paste.
  • Choose traditional if you want a long-term finish on walls you own, or your walls are slightly textured or freshly plastered and sealed.

Peel and stick wallpaper

Peel and stick is self-adhesive. You peel away the backing, smooth the panel onto the wall and reposition it as you go. There is no paste, no pasting table and very little mess, which is why it is popular for nurseries, rented homes and feature walls.

  • Hanging: straight out of the tube, no additional adhesive needed.
  • Adjusting: can be lifted and repositioned while you line up the pattern.
  • Removing: designed to be removed at a later date when you fancy a change.
  • Best on: smooth, clean, dry, painted walls. Fresh paint should be fully cured first.

Traditional (paste the wall) wallpaper

Our traditional paper is a thick, durable wallpaper hung with paste. With paste-the-wall paper you apply the paste to the wall rather than the paper, then hang each panel dry, which is quicker and tidier than the old soak-and-book method.

  • Hanging: wallpaper paste applied to the wall, panel hung straight from the roll.
  • Finish: a classic, long-lasting wallpaper finish.
  • Removing: it is not designed to be repositioned or taken down and reused, so treat it as a longer-term choice.
  • Best on: sound, prepared walls. It is more forgiving than peel and stick on walls that are not perfectly smooth.

How our wallpaper arrives

Both materials are made to measure. Panels are 61cm (24") wide by the height you choose, so a wall 260cm wide needs five panels. Murals arrive as numbered strips to hang from left to right, and instructions for your chosen material are included in every order.
